EPI-OFF AND EPI-ON CROSSLINKING LONG TERM RESULTS

Corneal crosslinking has revolutionized the conservative therapy of keratoconus and secondary ectasias and has changed the natural history of the disease leading to a reduction in corneal transplants for keratoconus from 30 to 50% depending on the cases. Today it is correct to talk about crosslinking since there are different variations of the technique, each with its possible indications. Prof Mazzotta, international pioneer of crosslinking and advocate of many crosslinking techniques, takes stock of EVIDENCE based literature and current recommendations for the correct use of the techniques.

CORNEAL DYSTROPHYES

Corneal dystrophies, a complex topic of ophthalmology, account for 6 to 9% of the causes of corneal transplantation. Genetics and current molecular diagnosis techniques are radically changing approaches to diagnosis and inevitably prognosis and therapies. In light of recent genetic investigations, Prof Mazzotta, through his great experience and his numerous publications on the subject, illustrates them masterfully by making simple what is not.

The CXL M nomogram fot the tratment of all thickness ectatic corneas.

Prof Mazzotta, pioneer, researcher and introducer of the corneal crosslinking technique in Italy, illustrates his standardized Nomogram of pachymetric-guided crosslinking treatment which has finally standardized the treatment of thin and ultra-thin corneas with progressive primary and secondary ectasia. This technique presented at the world premiere at the last ESCRS congress in Paris earned Prof Cosimo Mazzotta the Joseph Colin 2019 award for innovation in corneal surgery and the publication of the technique in the International Journal of keratoconus and Ectatic corneal Diseases.
